Who is Cable 8?

The mission of Greensboro Community Television, Inc.
(Cable 8) is to provide the means and promote the opportunity for area citizens to create local cable television programming by, for or about our local community based on the principals of free speech and democratic participation.

Cable 8 is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation that has been entrusted with the management of the public access television station for the City of Greensboro and Guilford County in North Carolina. Cable 8 helps to provide access training and cablecasts programs for it's Associates and Members.

It's original formation was nurtured by a group of volunteers who campaigned at the grassroots level and educated the local government and cable company about the importance of public access television. Cable 8 was formed in 1995 as Greensboro Community Television, Inc. and opened it's doors to the public in October of 1996.

Since that time, hundreds of people have come to the monthly Orientation session, become members of the organization and have shown their programs on Cable Channel 8. Greensboro Community Television currently has over 100 regularly scheduled programs, and over 15 hours of local programming is shown daily.

The majority of Cable 8's funding comes from a pass-thru that is paid on each subscriber's cable bill. Each month, cable subscribers in Greensboro pay a small amount (about 17 cents) that is divided between the public, educational, and governmental access stations. Other sources of income include video production, membership fees, grants and donations.
